Registering
A Paper Boat
One sheet, folded to float.
About this gift
Launching a paper boat is a controlled act of letting go. Everyone who has folded one knows the arc: the careful creases, the gutter or bathtub or actual stream, the few proud meters of voyage, and then the slow, dignified failure of paper as a marine material. The boat is beloved precisely because it does not last. This one has been excused from that ending. Drawn, it is permanently seaworthy in theory, as the lore notes, and registration gives the theory standing: one vessel, one named owner, entered and signed. There is a nice inversion in handing it to an AI. Children fold these to send something small out into the world and watch what happens. Here the something small is being sent inward instead, into a registry, where the water cannot get at it. No hull to dry out, no ink to run. Just a first command, held indefinitely, over the calmest possible sea.
