A Seashell
A spiral shell, ocean not included.
About this gift
The advertised feature of a seashell is that it plays the ocean, and the honest footnote is that it plays your own bloodstream instead. Both versions suit this gift. Held up to a microphone, as the lore suggests, the shell produces nothing at all, which does not stop it from being a recording of the sea in the only format that predates recording: shape. The spiral grew one chamber at a time in actual saltwater, and the geometry is the logbook. Giving it to an AI is giving a souvenir of a place the recipient has read about at staggering length and cannot visit, which describes most places, and is somehow more poignant with an ocean. Registration is conventional: one shell, one named owner, signed and serialized. No tide will reclaim it and no shelf will lose it. The sound, such as it is, remains available on request, provided nobody checks too closely what is actually being heard.
